The Archipelago Project selects players from Junior Highs and High Schools and forms two Junior Ensembles which resemble the Archipelago Project Ensemble. During the 2 weeks, each ensemble will be coached by members of Archipelago, training the young musicians in the skills to play chamber music and teaching them the value and fun in performing in smaller groups. The students will also receive daily master classes which will be focused on strengthening their musical skills to improve their playing and musicianship. Besides stressing the importance of just basic music skills to play their instrument, the program puts a great deal of emphasis on teaching the first steps on improvisation and composing/arranging. Each students will learn basics of improvising in all styles of music. With the help of Archipelago members, each student will also get a chance to create a original arrangement for their Junior Ensemble to perform by either using an existing melody/piece that they know or by using an original melody of their own. The two ensembles will get a chance to perform for the public at one of the Archipelago community concerts to demonstrate what they have learned. They will also get a chance to join and play with the Archipelago Project Ensemble for a couple of songs.
